If during the present century that profession shall succeed in overcoming three terrible germ diseases which still afflict mankind, tuberculosis, leprosy and syphilis, no other profession need dispute its primacy. Byron's second source of ' Never dying ill' was' the Prince.' We got rid of him when we got rid of George the Third. We shall not soon forget that one of the characteristic acts of that Prince was to lay before his council a memorandum in his own hand-writing in which he recommended the employment of the red Indians against his rebellious subjects in North America, --men whose crime consisted in fighting for their rights as Englishmen. The red Indians were so employed, and they massacred and tortured friend and foe alike, loyalist as well as patriot. Not should we soon forget that the agents of that same Prince, again in the year 1811, incited the red Indians to a war against us, which, from the Lakes to the Gulf, filled our frontier settlements with fire and massacre. Nor shall we soon forget that the spirit of that Prince again touched us in characteristic fashion in the year 1814, when a raid from his ship burned four public buildings in our capitol at Washington. But we did put the Prince forever behind us when General Pakenham and one-third of his army sank into the earth in twenty-five minutes under the fire of Andrew Jackson at New Orleans. And when, eight days later, what remained of the defeated host retreated through the deep mud to its ships, the minions of a foreign prince had set foot on our shores for the last time.
